Fun Fact: Jesus Is Black
Hello again everyone! This is Elder McMullin calling in again to share the wild, wacky, and downright wonderful parts of this week! So without further ado, here we go!
We had zone conference this week, which was super exciting. It started out with a bunch of gym Games (think YM/YW but with a bunch of immature guys in full suits). I am proud to say I got a ping pong ball into a cup during one of the games, meaning that my area won the tournament. Go us. Then, we got all of the speeches (some of which I was awake for) and then sang our Mission anthem, the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I know, I know, a bit weird, but a guy with a full ride to BYU for organ playing was our accompanist, so it was a blast. I truly felt like kicking a confederate in the face after it- spiritually, of course.
In other news, there is a strange sect of Christianity out here that is fun to deal with- the Hebrew Israelites. Their whole doctorine hangs on the fact that Jesus is black based on one description. That of course means that Jews are also black, and that only black people (and other oppressed minorities who apparently make up the house of Isreal) are saved by black Jesus. I say this because we had a friendly little bash with one over John Smith and his golden Bible, When a white and slightly drunk Evangelical joined the shouting match. Let me tell ya, that was fun. Other than that whole shebang, there is a church every other building out here, meaning plenty of humorous names. My favorite so far is the "Zions community of tents" based out of a strip mall next door to a palm reader. Nice.
Well, that's about all the excitement for this week. A great thought I heard was from our Mission president about the Israelites during the 40 years. Because the spies were too busy looking at the walls of Jericho, they ignored the delicious grapes beyond. So, in our lives, we should not be wall watchers, obsessed over all that could impede us, but grape gatherers, ready to fight and win our great (grapey) reward.
Anyways, see y'all next week!
