Second Impressions Are Just As Good, Right?
Hello again everyone! Coming live from the State where Pocohantas met not one, but TWO John's from England, it's Elder McMullin! As always, feel free to send me any rolls of tape or a salt packet, and I will happily accept. But, without further ado, here we go!
This week was certainly something. We found a single referral on Monday who was unable to come to church this week, but hopes and prayers for Juanita that she can make next one. She does live in Deep Gooch, which is problematic, but hey- we've done more with less. Other than that, it was pretty much donuts cross the board until Sunday, when God once again decided we needed to catch a break, and our (now) good friend John has entered the chat. I thought he blocked us after we talked to him for a little bit, but then had the distinct impression to call him again. He miraculously picked up and said he'd be at church on Sunday, which is what about 90% of the Gayton population says under pressure, so we had our hopes on medium-low heat. But! 20 seconds before the deacons scattered, he showed up and loved Sacrament meeting. Then, he stayed for second hour- and ended with a "I will be here next week." Hurrah for the God of Israel who makes people like this keep coming up in the beautiful land of Gayton- especially when some elders have given up hope in it.
That being said, I have to stay in this gosh darn place for yet another transfer, meaning more office shenanigans and more rich people. But it's worth it, because I know we can baptize someone here, and I'm just grateful for another chance to make a dent here in Richmond. My comp is also staying, so some boring news for us, but our district is getting supersliced with a new ZL, STL, and trainee coming to town- promising some fun changes on the way! We did get in a pickle though, as transfer news got posted to the office on Wednesday and we had a triple zone conference on Thursday to welcome President Warburton. This meant many many friends requesting news, and many many friends getting bad info as they changed the boards last-minute meaning 60% of our info was wrong. But, it at least made transfers exciting again for some as they got hit with some wicked curveballs.
Speaking of President (and the tagline) HES HERE! After flying in late Monday night, we got our first introduction to him on Tuesday in an AA-style folding chair circle in the Relief Society room. We went around and explained our life stories, but I had to go immediately after the senior missionaries, and since I have not kids, a job, prior experience in anything, or a plan for my life, I had to ad-lib some helpful information. This includes:
1) Getting my own age wrong
2) Guessing where Bountiful is on a map (and being wrong)
3) Nervously laughing about my soda addiction
4) mentioning the one time I had to break into a house through the window
5) bearing my testimony on the Atonement of Christ.
All jokes (and failed answers) aside, I was super happy to meet him. He genuinely loves the missionaries already, and I can tell we'll have some good times together. Plus, I got a redemption run by snapping a powerpoint together for him in 39 minutes, so all my good-natured bumbling was not without some results. However, thar progress may have been lost when Sister Warburton jokingly banned soda from the mission in her first interaction with us, and EVERY ELDER ON MY PEW AND THE PEW BEHIND starting patting me on the back and shooting sympathetic glances, knowing full well my addiction and how most of my sanity hangs on aspartame and prayer. Luckily, coke is still allowed, and President Warburton got to see some of my good friends sticking it up for old Elder McMullin. I think he likes me, despite not spelling my name right yet, and even stuck up for us on MLC- calling us the best SMLs in the world. We'll, us and Elder Morgan, but still. It was nice.
Anyways, I hope yall have a great week, and see you again soon!
From your favorite idiot in an interview,
Elder McMullin
